Big Time Race: Big Brown Vs. Curlin

May 30, 2008

It could be the greatest race of the year, and possibly one of the greatest ever. Two of the industries most dominating athletes racing against each other in a heavy weight battle not unlike Ali vs. Frasier, Magic vs. Bird, or Affirmed vs. Alydar during the 1978 Belmont Stakes.

Stuff of legends.

If Big Brown remains healthy he should win the Belmont, and if you believe his trainer Rick Dutrow, he will continue to race. However, Big Brown is nursing an injury to his left front hoof and has missed multiple training days leading up to the Belmont. Dutrow believes this will not impact the race on June 7th.

This sets up an amazing scenario for horse racing fans around the globe. Big Brown could face Curlin. If this plays out we could see the event of the year, pitting a young Triple Crown winner against the best horse in the world.

In the end, Big Brown needs to win the Belmont and become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. He does have some competition from the Japanese-trained Casino Drive who won the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park. More importantly, he needs to be healthy and ready to run again.

Then it's far more complicated, and the intrigue of setting up this race really widens. Would the owners agree to this race and on what track would they run? Belmont Park, Santa Anita, or a foreign track? One can only speculate, but the imagination runs wild in this dream match up.

Curlin is scheduled to make his next start on June 14 Th in the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.
