Sergio Kostitsyn Suspended For Leaving AHL Affiliate and Demanding Trade
On Wednesday, the NHL's Montreal Canadiens suspended forward Sergio Kostitsyn for the second time this season after Kostitsyn left the Canadiens' AHL affiliate in Hamilton. Kostitsyn is the younger brother of Andrei Kostitsyn who currently plays for the Canadiens. The 22 year old was originally suspended after he demanded to be traded when he was sent down to the minors during training camp. He refused to report to Hamilton for nearly a week before being suspended for his actions upon which time he reluctantly agreed to finally report to the team. Since joining Hamilton, he scored two goals and had four points in five games, but then decided to leave the team once again Tuesday night and demanded to be traded. He was suspended for the second time on Wednesday and is scheduled to meet with his agent, Don Meehan, and Canadiens' general manager Bob Gainey to discuss his future.
Kostitsyn scored 8 goals and had 15 assists in 56 games for Montreal last season, and he also had 13 points in 16 games for Hamilton. He believes he has earned the opportunity to play in the NHL, and he deserves a chance to prove himself or be traded to a team that will grant him the opportunity to do so. The Canadiens betting line odds of having a successful season without Kostitsyn will obviously be unaffected, as he is not yet a player that has the ability to significantly alter the franchise's chances of success. However, he does show promising potential to develop into a talented professional hockey player at some time in the future, and he will likely get a shot to play in the NHL some time in the near future. Whether or not he is given the opportunity to do so for Montreal remains to be seen, but it is a pretty good bet that his prima donna attitude won't help him at all in reaching that goal.
