Former Temple Star Gets Arrested on Firearms Charges After Being Released By 76ers
The former star guard of the Temple University Owls was arrested on early Thursday evening just one day after being cut by the Philadelphia 76ers. Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore informed the media that Dionte Christmas was stopped by Highway Patrol Officers at approximately 730 p.m. Thursday evening for what they described as erratic driving. After being pulled over, the officers discovered that Christmas was driving without a license, and that the vehicle he was driving had a 9mm semi-automatic pistol under the driver's seat. Christmas was then taken to the 35th district police station and charged with felony firearms offenses.
Although the 6' 5" guard averaged 19.5 points per game in his senior season at Temple, he had not shown enough talent and ability to compete at the NBA level during the preseason, and as a result, Philadelphia cut him on Wednesday. Neither Christmas's agent Andre Buck, nor Sixers spokesman Mike Preston would comment on the current status of the situation. The Sixers will undoubtedly be unaffected by the absence of Christmas as they chose to cut him anyway. However, in light of his current predicament, the betting odds of any team picking up Christmasup regardless of his ability are highly unlikely until he resolves the felony charges that he is faced with. My guess is that he is a good bet to be sitting out of NBA action for at least the upcoming 2009-2010 season.
