NHL's Canucks' Injuries Continue To Mount

Vancouver's Wellwood The Latest Casualty to Join The Injured Reserve List

The NHL's Vancouver Canucks continue to be decimated by injuries in the early part of the 2009-2010 NHL season. Canucks' center Kyle Wellwood is the most recent addition to the IR list since he broke his big toe late in Saturday's 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wellwood broke the big toe on his right foot when he attempted to block a slap shot by Toronto's Mike Komisarek in the third period of the game. The status of Wellwood's return is unknown, but is said to be on a day to day prognosis. He will return to the ice as soon as the swelling on his toe subsides enough for him to be able to get a skate on, and then put pressure on his right foot while skating.

Although Wellwood has clearly struggled so far this season by getting only one assist in the first ten games, the Canucks can ill afford to lose him or any other player at the present time due to the current state of the key injuries they have already suffered. The Canucks are already without the services of Pavol Demitra due to a shoulder surgery he has yet to recover from; top scorer Daniel Sedin due to a broken foot; top all around defenseman Sami Salo due to a sprained knee; speedy winger Jannik Hansen due to a broken hand; and Rick Rypien due to a groin injury. Rypien may return this week, but Sedin and Salo will be out for at least two more weeks, and Hansen and Dimetra will be out for several more weeks. After combining all of the key injuries that the Canucks have suffered, including the most recent one to Wellwood, the betting line odds of the team being able to remain a competitive force in the Northwest division are virtually zero. They need to get their quality injured players healthy and back on the ice to have any chance at all of saving their season.
