Former Masters Champion Likely Out Of PGA For A Year
PGA member and the 2008 Masters champion has had surgery on his left wrist in an attempt to repair the severe tendinitis he has experienced throughout the entire 2009 golf season. Immelman has sat out most of the PGA season in hopes of allowing the injury enough time to heal on its own. Unfortunately, resting has not helped heal the injury, and as a result, surgery became the only legitimate option that would have the chance of fixing the problem. The surgery was performed in New York on Thursday by the same surgeon that did very similar types of procedures on Jim Furyk and Luke Donald.
If the surgery is a success, it can only help Immelman's betting odds of once again being a competitive player on the PGA tour; he has not won at all since the Masters in 2008. Although he will have his work cut out for him, he does expect to return to the tour at full strength some time next year. First, howeverer, he will have to begin a rigorous rehabilitation process beginning with strength exercises in approximately six to eight weeks. Upon successful completion of strength rehab, he may be able to begin his long road to recovery by chipping and putting in approximately 3 to 4 months. The betting odds of returning to peak competitive condition are certainly stacked against him, but Immelman does believe he can fully recover from the injury and play at full strenght at some time in the future; chances are though it won't be next year.
