Colorado's Backup Goalie Contracts Swine Flu Virus
The NHL's Colorado Avalanche announced to the media Tuesday that their backup goalie Peter Budaj did in fact have the swine flu, but that no other player on the team had come down with the virus. The Avalanche brought up goalie Tyler Weiman from the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL to take Budaj's place on the roster and serve as starting goalie Craig Anderson's backup. Colorado's spokesperson also added that the team's doctors would have to completely clear Budaj before he would be allowed to rejoin the team.
Because Budaj was the backup goalie, replacing him with Tyler Weiman is not likely to negatively affect the Avalanche in any way. The Avalanche are currently one of the best teams in the NHL and they have achieved that status without the presence of Budaj as he has yet to play a single game in the nets this year. The sportsbooks' betting line on the Avalanche will not change one single bit during his absence. Of course, if Budaj somehow infects any other members of the team, then there its a good bet, depending on the degree that the virus spreads through the team, that things could turn sour for the Avalanche awful quick.
