New Jersey Picks Up Options on Yi, Lopez and Lee
The NBA's New Jersey Nets announced on Thursday that they would be picking up contract options on starters Yi Jianlian, Cortney Lee, and Brook Lopez. The move that will keep the three starters member of the New Jersey Nets through the 2010- 2011 NBA season was designed to help solidify their roster in hopes of improving the franchise's possibilities of becoming a playoff contender. The signing of Lee and Lopez will be exercising third year contract options for an undisclosed amount of money, and the signing of Yi will be exercising a fourth year option that will pay him an estimated $4 million.
Although the team did attempt to keep some continuity in the structure of team's first unit, the move by the Nets to secure Yi, Lee, and Lopez is not nearly enough to make the Nets a competitive force in the NBA. Until they get some true quality NBA players added to their current roster, the betting odds of them going anywhere but home for the NBA playoffs this season will remain extremely high. They need to spend some money on some real talent or find a general manager who can acquire talent through the draft or trades that can actually help the team get to the next level, or it is a pretty good basketball bet that Nets will always be a mediocre stepping stone for the rest of the league.
