Anaheim's Defenseman Suspended For Hit On Doan
The NHL announced on Monday that it was suspending Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski for two games because of a hit he gave Phoenix Coyotes' Shane Doan. The incident occurred during the first period of Saturday night's game between the ducks and the Coyotes when Wisniewski delivered a blow to Doan's head with his forearm. Wisniewski didn't receive a penalty at the time of the hit, but after reviewing the incident later, the NHL decided to hand him a two game suspension without pay. Wisniewski will be required to sit out Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as Thursday's game against the Nashville Predators. In addition, Wisniewski will lose $28,000 in salary as a result of his absences due to the suspension.
The suspension will not likely affect the Ducks overall record as he will only be absent for two games. However, the sportsbooks' betting odds on the next two games may be affected, and it's a pretty good bet that their chances of beating the Penguins will definitely drop. This is another move by the NHL to show the teams and their players that cheap, unsportsmanlike play will not be tolerated, and although they may not be issued a penalty at the time of the incident, the league reserves the right to review any questionable misconduct at any time after the incident. Furthermore, if it finds the conduct to be unacceptable, they will not hesitate to continue to enforce strict punishments for such behavior. So far this season, they have been consistent in this approach in hopes of deterring future unnecessary behavior, and the betting odds of this type of behavior being significantly reduced as a result is very favorable.
