Forward Dane Byers Gets Suspension and Rangers Coach Gets Fined
The NHL announced Wednesday that New York Rangers forward Dane Byers would have to serve a one game suspension for his role in a fight that occurred during the third period of Tuesday night's game against the Canucks in Vancouver. Byers will also forfeit $2950 in pay to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. In addition, the NHL fined Rangers coach John Torterella $10,000, which will be donated to the NHL Foundation, because one of his players, Byers, was determined to be the instigator of the altercation that delayed the game almost 10 minutes when Vancouver's Ryan Kessler and New York's Marion Gaborik started a brawl that led to 5 misconduct penalties.
The fines and the suspension will not likely have any adverse affects on the Rangers or the betting odds on their ability to win games in the future as the 23 year old forward will be back in action on Saturday in Calgary against the Flames. It is, however, another example for players and coaches of the strict punishment that the NHL is consistently willing to enforce for player misconduct which is a sure bet to sooner or later clean up the cheap tactics that some players continue to engage in around the league.
