MLB's White Sox Sign Kotsay

Chicago Agrees to One Year $1.5 Million Contract With Kotsay

The Chicago White Sox signed infielder/outfielder Mark Kotsay to a one year $1.5 million contract on Thursday. The 33 year old veteran became eligible for free agency this year after playing 67 games combined between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox last season in which he managed to bat .278 with 4 home runs and 23 RBI's.

The White Sox acquired Kotsay in a deal on July 28th that sent outfielder Brian Anderson to the Red Sox. Since his arrival to the White Sox, the left handed hitter batted .292 with 3 home runs and 18 RBI's in 40 games. For his career, Kotsay is a .281 hitter with 113 home runs to his credit in 13 major league seasons.

Although Kotsay may provide some versatility to the White Sox roster, the aging veteran is not going to be the answer to the White Sx problems by any means. Kotsay may be able to contribute at times throughout the season, but he is certainly not going to improve the sportsbooks' betting line odds of the Sox making the playoffs. They are a sure bet to have a very long season spent mostly in the bottom of the division standings if they don't add some quality pitchers to their rotation in the offseason! I'm absolutely certain that they could get have gotten a lot better prospect for $1.5 million than what they wound up with in Kotsay.
