NHL's Sharks Send Blake To IR List

San Jose's Captain Suffers Upper Body Injury

The San Jose Sharks defenseman Rob Blake was placed the injured reserve list Thursday after incurring an upper body injury during Wednesday night's game in Columbus against the Blue Jackets. The team spokesperson did not reveal the specific details of the injury other than it occurred in Blake's upper body, and although the severity of it had not yet been determined, they would have to place him on the IR list and call up defenseman Derek Joslin from Worcester of the American Hockey League to replace him during his absence.

There is no clear indication as to the length of time Blake is expected to be off of the ice, but it appears as though it shouldn't be for any extended period of time. That is good news for the Sharks because Blake is the captain and top defenseman of the team, and prior to his injury, he has scored one goal and made five assists from his position. He has also been a key factor in the ability of the Sharks to enjoy such successful results up to this point in the season. Joslin on the other hand has appeared in only two games for the Sharks this year and is far less experienced as well as far less affective on the ice, compared to Blake. Should Blake's injury persist longer than originally anticipated, the Sharks would be a sure bet to suffer in the long run with Joslin in his spot; and, the betting odds of the team holding on to the first place spot in the Pacific division standings would be in serious jeopardy.
