MLB's Mariners Claim Petit Off Waivers

Seattle Claims Pitcher Petit From Arizona

The Seattle Mariners claimed right handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. The New York Mets originally signed the non drafted Petit as a free agent in 2001 and then traded him to the Florida Marlins after the 2005 season as part of the Carlos Delgado trade deal. He ended up in Arizona after just one season with the Marlins, and he pitched for the Diamondbacks in both starting and releiving roles for the past two seasons prior to being claimed by the Mariners on Thursday.

The addition of Petit to the Mariners pitching staff can in no way increase the betting line odds of the being a better team with him in their starting rotation. The 24 year old pitched in 23 games for Arizona last season and had only a 3-10 record with a very poor 5.82 ERA. In the 17 games that he actually started for the Diamondbacks, he was no better; he had a 3-9 record, and a 5.72 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings. Furthermore, in 71 carer appearances, 36 of them being as a starter, he has only a 10-20 record with a 5.57 career ERA. I'm not exactly sure how or why the Mariners decided to pick up Petit off waivers, but I do know that they are a sure bet to get even worse next season if they plan on actually using him in their starting rotation.
