Vancouver Defenseman Shane O'Brien Gets One Game Suspension
The NHL announced Thursday that they were issuing Vancouver Canucks' defenseman Shane O'Brien a one game suspension for his conduct during the game the Canucks played against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. O'Brien will miss one game and be required to forfeit $8290.16 in salary for the incident that occurred at 4:21 of the third period of the contest. Apparently, O'Brien's stick somehow made contact with Rangers' Sean Avery while both players remained on their respective benches. Although no penalty was assessed at the time of the incident, the league found the conduct to be unacceptable and worthy of a one game suspension without pay.
The loss of O'Brien will not affect the Canucks' performance in any way as they will only lose O'Brien's services for only one game, however, it may add to the affect the disciplinary actions that the NHL continues to impose on the players' choices of conduct in the future. The NHL have been adamant about enforcing strict punishments for inappropriate behavior in an effort to clean up the game, and provided that they continue to be stern and consistent in the actions they take for rule violations, they are a sure bet to be successful in deterring such behavior in the future.
