Ramirez Exercises $20 Million Extension to Return To LA for 2010
The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Friday that Manny Ramirez's agent Scott Boras informed the team's general manager Ned Colletti that his client has decided to exercise his $20 million contract option to return as a Dodger for the 2010 MLB season. Ramirez was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Dodgers in July of 2008. After serving a 50 game suspension imposed by the league for violating baseball's drug policy, Ramirez hit .290 with 19 home runs and 63 RBI's in 104 regular season games this season. In addition, he batted .308 with no home runs and two RBI's in the NL Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, and he batted .263 with one home run and two RBI's in the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The move by Ramirez to exercise his option for 2010 was a great one for himself but not such a great one for the Dodgers. Ramirez had a descent season with fairly productive offensive numbers in the games he played for the Dodgers this past season, and although his playoff numbers weren't spectacular by any means, they were at least respectable. However, the betting line odds of him receiving $20 million from any other MLB franchise in the free agent marketplace are nonexistent. The discovery of his drug issues and the recent display of lack of emotion after taking a shower before the playoff game was completed, are just a couple of examples of the obvious selfish attitude that Ramirez possesses. In today's marketplace, the Dodgers would be a sure bet to be able to find a player equally talented with more future potential and a lot longer shelf life remaining than Ramirez has, and without question do it for a lot less than $20 million. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, they will have to wait for one more year when Ramirez's contract is up to do something more prudent than what they are stuck with now.
