Preview of the 2009 Players Championship

Golf fans world wide will be viewing the popular Players Championship this weekend in beautiful Ponte Vedra Beach Florida.

The Players Championship has one of the worlds largest purse bringing the best players from around the globe to challenge the "the Island Green" and the "running the gauntlet" to win this years championship.

This year's field is outstanding with the top players battling each other for a share of the huge $9.5 million purse.

Most eyes will be on the 2001 Players Champion Tiger Woods whose game is starting to emerge after a solid showing at Quail Hollow last week. In fact, on the official Tiger Woods web site Woods has stated that he is looking to tweak his game for the Players and hopefully walk away with this year's championship.

Spain's Sergio Garcia will be defending his 2008 championship against a start studded field that includes Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington, Geoff Ogilvy, Tiger Woods, (BSW favorite player) Kenny Perry and Zack Johnson.

The Players Championship is also known as the "fifth major" even though it is not listed as a major. This is due in part because the PGA gives the winning player a tremendous amount of points leading to the world golfing rankings and also because of its huge purse.

More over, the championship is played in May giving the PGA 6 marquee events back to back from April through September. Lastly, the Players Championship is one of the most popular events for fans and golfers alike which lead's to its "major" type feel.

The annual event is played on the challenging Stadium Course at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass. The Players Championship is currently playing as a par 72 at 7,215 yards. The course was designed in 1979 by Pete Dye and again redesigned by Dye in 2006. The course was built to favor the view of the spectator and designed to favor no particular player or style of play.

Capping this years Championship will once again prove to be difficult. We like Sergio Garcia to repeat due to his quality play on this Stadium Course. Other players to look for include Mickelson, Woods, Cink, Perry and Eels.

Looking at a dark horse player might include Stephen Ames, Chad Campbell and Pat Perez.
