LA Dodgers GM Neil Colletti makes two smart moves by resigning Casey Blake and signing veteran Mark Loretta. Loretta an ex-Red Sox will add grit to Torres's squad and help leverage the outfield if Manny signs elsewhere. Third baseman Casey Blake hit 21 home runs and provided the team with 81 RBI's last year. That's solid production from the hot corner.
What of Manny?
LA has already offered Manny Ramirez a deal to come back, but it looks like Ramirez is testing the market. Manny had 37 home runs and 121 RBI's last season. With the total number of Major League home runs down last year he could be a huge commodity on this year's market.
Looks like CC Sabathia is about to cash in big (160 million) and play with his good buddy Derek Jeter. The New York Yankee's are said to be extremely close to signing Sabathia to the largest pitching contract in the history of the MLB. I guess it's true when they say the rich get richer. Sorry West Coast.
The "other" New York baseball team has also made news by signing closer Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a fantastic pitcher who notched 62 saves last year and should improve a down and out Mets bullpen. The Mets are also looking at starter Oliver Perez to fill in for the departure of often injured Pedro Martinez. Huston Streets name has surfaced as a possible bullpen fixture.
The Mets still need relief pitching so keep you eyes open for more signings
Kerry Woods is close to signing with The Cleveland Indians pending a physical. If Woods stays injury free then the Indians should have an improved pen this year after a disappointing 2008 season. The team has a solid base of players which include Grady Sizemore and stud Carlos Lee. The tribe is also rumored to be looking at Rafael Furcal due to the ability of productive short stop Jhonny Peralta moving to third base.
If Mark Shapiro can fill holes, add some hope to the bullpen, fans should look at the 2009 Tribe as a dark horse to win the AL Central.
The Atlanta Braves looking to rebound after another terrible season have traded for pitcher Javier Vazquez and are said to be aggressively pursuing AJ Burnett. Good news for Bobby Cox who has verbalized his worry over starting pitching. GM Frank Wren is also said to looking at Corey Hart, Rick Ankiel and Jeremy Hermida in a possible trade. The Braves needs to improve its team in an ultra competitive NL East that includes The New York Mets and World Series Champions the Philadelphia Phillies.
Philadelphia has had a few low profile signings after taking this years Pennant, but look for a hot free agent or player trade before next year. The Phillies have been one of the most aggressive free agent teams in the last decade. The Phillies are looking at free agent starter Derek Lowe and are said to be a "third-party facilitator" in the Jake Pevey deal.
