For the first time in history the US Championship will be played at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California and only the second time played on a public course. Torrey Pines joins New York's Beth Page Sate Park as the only two public golf courses to host a US Open.
The Torrey Pines golf course is stunning. The course sits atop coastal bluffs overlooking dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, and its beautiful coastline. This years US Open will be played on the South course which was designed in 1957 by William Bell and has since been renovated by Reese Jones in 2001.
As usual the big news in golf is Tiger Woods who is slated to play the Open after rehabbing a knee injury that forced him out of the Memorial. Woods was recently noted as saying he still had some stiffness in his knee, but is ready to play the Open. Tiger who owns the south course record of 62 has an impressive win percentage at Torrey Pines winning the last five of six Buick Opens and should have an excellent shot at winning this year's event if healthy.
More players to watch like California native and recent Crowne Plaza Invitational winner Phil Mickelson will need more then "luck" to win this year's event. To be fair, lefty did hit a beautiful 140 yard wedge shot to set up that win, and more over Mickelson has had success winning at Torrey Pines.
Dark horses to consider are this years PGA surprise, Ryuji Imada who came in second to Woods at this years Buick. Also look out for Luke Donald and Charles Howe III who have had good showings at Torrey Pines. Lastly, can Sergio Garcia who recently won the Players Championship finally win a major?
2007 champion Angel Cabrera defends his US Open title on June 12-15 Th.
